Stripes to Success

What is the Stripe System?
The Stripe System is used to motivate and reward our students ages 7 through 17 for their hard work and good behavior. It is also designed to challenge each student to set goals and work towards achieving them. All students will be required to earn stripes (depending on age and level) in order to qualify for belt testing. This system is intended to help build discipline, respect, good habits, better focus, and positive attitude. These qualities are needed in every aspect of ours lives - not just here in our Do Jang.  We have a special program in place for children ages 4 through 6 - the Little Tiger program

This system should be used as a tool to help build strong, confident, responsible, and respectful citizens of our school and our community.

The Stripes to Success and Little Tiger Program consist of the following:

Stripes to Success
Blue: Knowledge Through Reading
Black: Attitude Stripe
Red: School Success
Green:
Tae Kwon Do Technique

The Blue Stripe - Blue Stripe Form (PDF)

The Blue Stripe is earned when the student reads the required number of books based on his/her age or belt level. (Refer to the requirements.) These books are chosen by the student and/or parent. However, we would like to encourage you to challenge your child. This stripe is intended for them to gain knowledge of the people and world around them. As Master Kim put it: "You can experience things and go to unknown places by reading a book."

Encourage your child to read books about exciting places and interesting people. Help them find books that will interest them so that they will be motivated to read and explore. Any book that the student is required to read for Literature Class can be counted towards this stripe. Small picture books are adequate for the beginning reader. We leave the decision up to you as a parent.

The Attitude Stripe - Attitude Stripe Sample (PDF)
The most important lesson to master in the martial arts is the development of Positive Attitude.  This is personified by actions of thoughtfulness and respect.  Attitude stripes will be awarded for showing respect, appreciation, cleanliness, responsibility, love & thanks and going above & beyond at home.  To earn a stripe, students must return their signed Task Approval Sheet from a parent, teacher, sibling, or other appropriate mentor.  In order to be invited to belt test, the student must attain 7 Black Stripes during the quarter.  If the student earns 10 or more stripes, they will be awarded a gold star.  Once the student has earned four gold stars, they will be awarded a special trophy.
The Red Stripe
The Red Stripe is given to a student when they bring back the Red Stripe Application. This is a progress report that will inform Master Kim of his students performance in school. This is beneficial for a couple of reasons. First: Master Kim will be able to see how his students perform in other aspects of their lives. Second: This report will be used to gauge improvements in a student who is struggling with homework, behavior, or attendance. Consistent problems will be discussed with the child and parent in an effort to help in any way possible. This is intended to encourage each student to always do his/her best in school. Any improvement, even small, will be recognized and rewarded.

The Green Stripe
Consistent attendance and hard work can attain the Green Stripe. This stripe is awarded when the student has demonstrated that he/she has successfully memorized the Tae Kwon Do techniques required for their belt level. This will be evaluated during classes starting approximately four weeks prior to belt testing. Instructors will challenge your child to perform at their very highest level and will give whatever direction and encouragement they can to ensure success However, each student is expected to work hard to achieve success.
